I thank those who have always been supportive of my podcast. Too many things have got in my way of updating it more often, and for too many times I have thought of stopping it, but each time when I see the number of listeners of my shows, I know, you are the reason for me. This is Real Story.

Many Chinese people think black people are all from Africa and there are no blacks in America. There is another misunderstanding about the blacks: people think they are really better in sports than other races. It’s surprising to find that we are in the information age, and some people still have these wrong ideas about them, but the truth is they are also people, just like everyone else, some are good, and some are bad. According to the historical books, black people have been in China for more than you can imagine: there were many blacks in Tang Dynasty.(Audio 1)

The first black person I met was Mr. Senda, who taught me English in college for 2 years, then later I met many other blacks. However Mr. Senda left me the best impression about black people, and he changed my ideas about them: he was medium in height, always smiling with shining white teeth. After the first class I called him, and we met in his apartment, I practiced English with him and he asked me how to use the computer. He would invite me to his parties and called me when he needed me to translate something for him. So later we became good friends. As I spent more time with him, my English became much better and I knew more about his country: South Africa.Because of him, I applied for a South African University for further study, even though I failed. On my third year of college, Mr. Senda went to Shenyang to teach. Then I graduated, got married and over the years I lost his contact. Until 7 years ago, I met him again in Shenyang. I feel grateful that he was once an important part of my college life. Each time I got a chance to speak English with foreigners, I think of Mr. Senda. There’s always a part in my English speaking that I learnt from him. I think the best I leant is I see the world from a different point of view, as he taught me to think different, being the same is boring. One day in this spring, I told him I started kickboxing training and he said I inspired him. “cool”I said to myself.

African blacks feel more difficult to survive in Asia. While Sam from Ghana found a way to be popular in Korea.(Audio 2)

Japan has a bad reputation for accepting foreigners, so seeing a black in Japan is very rare. But Ike as a Nigerian American is seen on TV every day.(Audio 3)

After I graduated from college, I met some other blacks who struggled to survive in China, and they faked their documents to find a teaching job. A man called Peter from Cameroon became my friend 8 years ago. We had many talks over beer and hung out together. I also went to his Christmas parties each year. Then the college I worked in needed a foreign teacher, so I recommended Peter. He came to teach our students for one semester. One evening during the semester, the woman in charge of foreign affairs of my college called me, asking me if I knew about Peter’s fake documents. I asked Peter and he admitted. I was so surprised and embarrassed because he never told me anything about it, and I had never asked him before he came over. Peter was sent back to his country a few years later, also because of his fake documents.

Years later I had an opportunity to visit Guangzhou twice. It was midnight and I was hungry and tried to find somewhere to eat with my Swiss friend Andre. We saw many black people at the street corners, selling cell phones and something else in the dim light. Later I learnt in Guangzhou only, there are over 2000 blacks, doing different jobs. So no wonder there are many  of them that can not find a job. As one of the foreigners said, people are people, good and bad. Maybe skin colour does not matter, what do you think?
