Welcome to Real story, I’m Frank X. In today’s show I’ll tell two stories about how much an old guitar means to people and the way it changes their lives.

Koma’s life seemed hard since he was born in a worker’s family in 1962. His family lived in a small apartment of less than 30 square meters in Hong Kong. They were so poor that they couldn’t even send him to high school. So little Koma did many jobs after school to support himself and his family. He had no idea what to do with his life. “Am I gonna be the office boy for the rest of my life?”He kept asking himself in his poor home, watching the beautiful lights out of his old windows. He wanted to know the answer, so did his parents. He spent years working and thinking about what to do with his life to make a difference until one day, his long-time neighbor moved away and he found an old and dirty guitar from his neighbor’s room after they were gone. It was nothing but a piece of trash to his neighbor, but it was like treasure to 17-year-old Koma. He loved it so much that he would try to play it whenever he was free at home.He didn’t know if this guitar could change his life but he knew it was the very first musical instrument in his life.At least he wanted to enjoy the beautiful music it made. So he started to learn how to play it in an underground band near his home.People in the bands told him his playing was terrible and made fun of him. He was so upset about their comments. When he saw his brother at home, he told him, someday he would play much better than those people. And he did it a few years later. He worked harder every day to learn how to play the guitar. Hard work did pay off for Koma.In 1983 he set up his own band with a few friends and won No. 1 at a guitar-playing competition. In the following year Koma and his band tried to make their own music and their first Album “Hong Kong”. They even made their first concert the same year. Koma’s music became hugely popular and everywhere on the radio in 1987 in Hong Kong. He would never make it without his first guitar, which was left to him by his neighbor, and as many Chinese know it, this boy’s band is called “Beyond”, and Koma has another Chinese name: Huang Jiaju. He died in an accident on a stage when he was singing in Japan, at only 31.

A guitar doesn’t have to be expensive to make a difference to one’s life, just like the story of Beyond you just heard. It can also live on long after a person’s gone.The following story is about how a lost guitar helped the son see his father in a new light.Roger Daniels had a rough life after his parents divorced when he was little.One thing brought joy to his life was his father’s old blue guitar. Roger’s father didn’t have much education in his life, but he tried to learn the guitar all by himself. In his father’s early years, on Fridays nights his father and his friends would gather in his small bedroom, each brought his own guitar, playing and singing church songs, drinking whisky. His father got a serious drinking problem with alcohol .He was mostly drunk and Roger’s step-mom told his father if he was coming home drunk late again, he would have to sleep in the garage. One evening he found him sleeping in the garage and woke him up. His father died in 1969 in a car accident , related to use of alcohol.Then his guitar was gone until 25 years later a woman called him, asking him: “How would you get the guitar back?”Then she brought it to Roger, it was clearly his father’s old blue guitar. The woman said back in 1969 when she went to a store shopping, she heard beautiful guitar music played from the back of the store. Then the butcher came out, she told him what she wanted. Seconds later another man, who looked drunk, he was Roger’s father, told her they were out of money and whisky, if she would like to trade his guitar with a bottle of whisky. She ran to the next store and came back with whisky. She got the guitar and her husband taught their two sons how to play it and now her children were grown-up.So she wanted to give it back to Roger.(audio 1)

Seeing the old guitar back, he knew the guitar meant forgiveness in life. Speaking of forgiveness, he has been working most of his life in a field fighting alcohol addiction. He tried to play the guitar many times but failed to learn.Now he has his son-in-law in his family, a guitar player. Hearing music played from the old guitar, he felt more than words could say and it brought his father alive.(audio 2)
